Protect Lakeland’s Future

Dear Lakeland Community,

The past year has been difficult for all of us. Most recently, we’ve faced hard conversations about the future of our programs, our people, and the institution we all care so deeply about.

On March 7, 2025, the Board of Trustees approved a reduction in force, resulting in the involuntary separation of 10 full-time faculty members and the elimination of four programs. These decisions follow collaborative discussions between the Lakeland Faculty Association and the administration, where every effort was made to minimize the impact on students, faculty, and the broader campus community.

On behalf of the faculty, I want to express our gratitude to those who worked in good faith to find alternatives, explore creative solutions, and preserve as many positions and programs as possible. I also want to recognize the 14 senior faculty members who made the difficult decision to retire, which helped protect opportunities for newer faculty and the programs they support.

Even with those efforts, there is real loss today, and I want to acknowledge the dedicated faculty members and programs affected by involuntary separation. These individuals have shaped the student experience at Lakeland for years, mentoring, teaching, and guiding countless students toward their goals. Their absence will be felt not only in their departments, but across our entire campus community.

As we move forward, the Lakeland Faculty Association remains committed to collaboration, transparency, and shared governance. The challenges we face as an institution will only be met through open communication and mutual respect.

To our students, staff, and community partners — we remain dedicated to providing the high-quality education and support you expect from Lakeland. To our colleagues affected by today’s decision, you have our unwavering support. And to everyone who stood in solidarity throughout this process, your strength and commitment to each other has once again shown why this is such a special place.

We may face difficult moments, but I am confident that through our shared commitment to this college and to each other, we can build a stronger future for Lakeland and for the students and community we serve.

In solidarity and with respect,
Tobin F. Terry
President of the Lakeland Faculty Association
